Danny Postel and Nader Hashemi will be discussing their new, co-edited book, “Sectarianization: Mapping the New Politics of the Middle East”. Their book provides an essential and comprehensive discussion by some of the most esteemed Middle East scholars on the history of sectarianism in the Middle East, leading to its recent emergence as a product of geopolitical contestation between regional powers and their local proxies.

Panelists’ bios:

Danny Postel is Associate Director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies. He is the author of ‘Reading “Legitimation Crisis” in Tehran: Iran and the Future of Liberalism’ and co-editor of ‘Sectarianization: Mapping the New Politics of the Middle East’, ‘The People Reloaded: The Green Movement and the Struggle for Iran’s Future’ and ‘The Syria Dilemma’.

Nader Hashemi is Director of the Center for Middle East Studies and Associate Professor of MiddleEast and Islamic Politics at the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel Schoolof International Studies. He is the author of Islam, Secularism, and Liberal Democracy: Toward a Democratic Theory for Muslim Societies. He is co-editor of The People Reloaded: The Green Movement and the Struggle for Iran’s Future.
